The LBC Constitution and Bylaws state that the purpose of the club shall be:

1.  Promotion of Cycling. Encourage recreational cycling activities and the need for safer cycling conditions
2.  Encourage public facilities for cycling
3.  Educate and encourage members to observe all traffic regulations
4.  Provide association with national and statewide organizations such as the United States Cycling Federation, Texas Bicycle Coalition, League of American Bicyclist.

The LBC hosted a week long ride for all comers from 1990 until 2005.  In the early years, the Longview Newspaper was largely responsible for the organization of the ride, but in 1995, they pulled out.  A brash naive young man by the name of Ric Calloway stepped up and said "The LBC can do it alone" and that started the eleven years that the LBC sponsored the Texas Chainring Challenge.  Ric was Ride Director that first year and we rode "To Hill and Back" in the Texas hill country.  The next year we did the State Tour with Lee McCord as Ride Director and then in 1997, Sharon McCord began an eight year stint as Ride Director as we rode "Around the Bend" .  Great ride and great memories, but eventually LBC members became burned out with the responsibility of a week long ride and the LBC discontinued the Texas Chainring Challenge in 2005.  One of the great towns we visited often on the Chainring was Clarksville and they have continued to offer a 3 day tour on the same first week in June that was always the Chainrings date.  The Clarksville "Gateway to Texas - Get-away Tour" is a great ride and a great continuation of the Texas Chainring tradition.
